Difficult Conditions Challenge Sailors

Laser Radial Open and Women World Championship - Difficult Conditions Challenge Sailors
RIVA DEL GARDA, ITALY-(29-7-2003) After the first day of racing in good winds a late evening thunderstorm killed the possibilities for the thermal lake wind to properly build over the next two days which meant long hours on the water and difficult conditions for the sailors.

At the end of the third day not all the fleets had completed the scheduled 4 races as courses were shortened in an attempt to save races in a dying wind. The top sailors in both the male and female fleets were not immune from the difficult conditions with many scoring their worst result of the series so far.

In the womens fleet Krystal Weir from Australia has a 5 point safety penalty cancelled by the jury which gave her the lead after the first day which she has maintained in spite of a 36th place in the fifth race.

In the men's fleet defending champion, Karlo Krpeljevic CRO leads a strong Croatian team with a second and a first to add to his previous two second places. Like Weir in the fifth race he suffered his worst result so far but many sailors would like to be discarding a sixth race at the halfway stage! First day leader, Jake Bartrom from New Zealand, suffered in the lighter conditions dropping to 11th after scores of 10th, 57th and 20th. He currently can discard his 57th place.

The Race Committee has scheduled an early start for the fourth day to hopefully take advantage of the morning `Peler` wind which blows from the north.
